Long Night of Science (October 2025)

On Saturday, October 25, 2025, the Chair of Electrical Energy Systems at FAU opened its laboratories in Erlangen and at the Energy Campus Nuremberg from 5 pm to midnight. The goal was to make current research on the energy transition tangible for visitors—and at the same time inspire young talent for the future of the energy sector.

Highlights for Young and Old

– Live demo on the analog grid model: Short circuits, synchronization, and typical grid faults were clearly visualized.

– High-voltage laboratory demonstration: Controlled lightning and switching operations produced impressive sparks and arcs—an eyecatching display highlighting the challenges of safely handling high voltages.

– Real-time control center: Visitors could see, via a direct connection to Nuremberg, how disturbances are immediately detected, analyzed, and resolved.

– AI-supported grid restoration simulator (NWA): As part of the GridAssist project, the team demonstrated how AI assistance systems simulate outage scenarios and propose optimal recovery strategies.

At the Nuremberg Energy Campus, additional presentations on “Energy transition in the distribution grid”, the energy storage laboratory, and interactive real-time simulations complemented the program, showcasing practical solutions in action.
