Panel Discussion at TU Dresden for Energy Engineering Students

On November 25, TU Dresden hosted the first panel discussion as part of the study skills module for students in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Renewable Energies: “Job Stories Live – Discover the Diversity.”

The discussion provided students with a practical perspective: first- and third-semester students gained exciting insights into the wide range of career paths in the energy industry. The goal was not only to showcase professional opportunities but also to encourage confidence in tackling the challenges of their studies.

Why is this important?

At the start of university, it is crucial to gain a sense of real-world practice. This is exactly where Job Stories Live comes in: experts from different areas of the energy sector shared their daily work experiences, offered personal tips, and explained what helped them master challenging foundational subjects. One clear takeaway: networks are key. Open exchange brings people together, builds resilience, and the diversity of participants enables shared success.

For students traditionally underrepresented in these fields, university can pose a double challenge—both academically and socially. The perspective of the two female speakers was particularly valuable: they encouraged students to trust their own voice, make it visible, and confidently pursue new paths.

What makes the energy industry so exciting?

The sector is transforming and shaping the path toward a climate-neutral future. New technologies such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, smart grids, storage solutions, digitalization, and AI are changing how energy is distributed and used. These advancements make power grids more efficient and secure—and open up fascinating opportunities for engineers. Jobs are evolving rapidly, becoming more interdisciplinary and offering increasing creative freedom.

What’s next?

In January, the module will be offered again and, in the long term, expanded to other universities. The aim is to connect academia and industry more closely, providing practical insights that help students navigate their studies.

Conclusion

Job Stories Live was more than an information event—it was a true source of inspiration. Students left not only with valuable career tips but also with the realization that the energy sector offers opportunities for anyone eager to actively shape the future.
