At the <strong>VDE Bayern Student Forum 2026<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fau.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAU Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg<\/a>, more than <strong>200 pupils<\/strong> showed just how varied, creative and hands-on <strong>STEM<\/strong> can be.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>28 July 2026<\/strong>, pupils from all types of schools, ranging from Year 5 to upper secondary level, came together to present their ideas and projects in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The projects covered <strong>digital technologies, natural sciences and sustainability as well as topics from medicine, energy and space exploration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The topics presented included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cCybersecurity \u2013 how secure is our data?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cReal-time response \u2013 how AI can save lives faster\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSustainable textiles put to the test \u2013 can nettle and hemp fibres replace cotton?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe physics of figure skating\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat bouncy balls and organs have in common and how this can help us diagnose cancer and tumours\u201d<\/li>\n<li>the question of how scientists search for extraterrestrial life and how realistic it is to detect it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Topics from the <strong>energy sector<\/strong> were also represented. One presentation explained clearly how a <strong>heat pump<\/strong> works, making even complex technical relationships understandable for the entire lecture hall. Other projects explored <strong>transparent solar panels and \u201cEnergy of the future: the Dyson swarm as a theoretical megasystem\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This wide range of topics showed just how many different ways there are to engage with STEM. Some questions arose from the school curriculum, while others reflected the pupils\u2019 own personal interests.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainability as a topic for the younger generation<\/h2>\n<p>One particularly memorable moment was the appeal by a <strong>Year 9 pupil<\/strong> to act more sustainably and <strong>preserve the Earth as a liveable planet for future generations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It became clear that STEM topics do not exist in isolation. They are closely linked to questions that will shape our future \u2013 from <strong>climate protection and energy supply to digitalisation, health and social responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr J\u00fcrgen Baier<\/strong> summed up another interpretation of STEM with the words: \u201c<strong>Make. Intrinsic curiosity. Dare.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This attitude was evident throughout the forum.
